The annual Diversity Weekend is around the corner. During the weekend of January 24-26, Ottawa Hills parents and other villagers are hosting 10 students from around the globe, who are coming to learn a bit more about our collective cultures and to share some of their own.
Diversity Weekend is an Ottawa Hills tradition dating back decades. While here, the visiting international students will speak with OH students in selected classrooms in the junior high, senior high and elementary school Friday. Here’s what you need to know and how you can help:
- Interested in being a host family? Contact Linda Sherry at firstname.lastname@example.org. Students arrive around 6 p.m. Thursday, January 24; the host family’s responsibility ends around 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26.
- Ottawa Hills’ students who cannot host but want to be involved can contact art teacher Hannah Lehmann to sign up for the weekend activities and receive a schedule of events.
- Any high school student who wants to spend time with our international students is welcome to attend the luncheon, our University of Toledo Recreation Center event, and after-party (all on Friday, January 25).
- AFS offers opportunities for OHHS students to study throughout the world, from Europe and Asia to South America and Africa. Most of these programs offer home stays with families! Program lengths vary, beginning at four weeks; semester, summer, and year-long opportunities are offered. Learn more at the AFS -USA website. Ask Linda about scholarships available for these programs.
