Since the school’s inception in 1939, the over 6000 graduates of Ottawa Hills High School can be found in every corner of the world, following their life’s passions and facing its challenges. Of these graduates, more than 150 have had the opportunity to serve our country through military service with seven giving the ultimate sacrifice. The Liberty Memorial Initiative endeavors to honor those who served and sacrificed by creating a memorial of three parts. Each will connect the memory of past Ottawa Hills students to the issues of today with visions for the future:
A flagpole memorial construction, including a circular brick walkway to surround the pentagonal flag base, upon which will be placed the names of those who have served with a special recognition to those who lost their lives. Perimeter space can be utilized for other appropriate acknowledgements and words of wisdom.
An annual Speaker Series, to support and enhance the teaching of topics related to civics, history and responsible citizenship not only for our country but for the world.
The annual Liberty Memorial award will be presented to the student who best demonstrates academic achievement in civics, social studies, government, history, and a demonstrated commitment to service for the larger community that pursues a more productive and naturally sustainable world.
