A recycling push has started across the district to collect everything from markers and highlighters to mechanical pencils and glue sticks.

“We are looking forward to kicking off our recycling initiative and seeing how much waste we can keep out of the landfills,” said parent Heather Phillips, this year's advisor to the Green Team advisor. (Green Team is the name of the Elementary School-based environmental club.)

The recycling efforts are being rolled out as part of two national programs: Crayola ColorCycle program and TerraCycle Zero Waste Box. To make sure the efforts get the visibility and participation needed, the Green Team is working with the district’s three art teachers (Cindy Bodziak, Hannah Lehmann, and Kristin Johnson).

Through the Crayola ColorCycle program, the district is collecting used markers, highlighters, and dry erase markers. Crayola provides the shipping label; the Green Team does the boxing and delivery to the post office.

In keeping with the spirit of the program, the Green Team has provided recycling bags (made from repurposed Green Bear shirts!) to each elementary classroom. Members of the Green Team will collect and sort the items as needed.

Through the TerraCycle program, the Green Team is leading an effort to collect used pens, mechanical pencils, and glue sticks/bottles. Those items are dropped into special containers purchased from TerraCycle; those containers are being deployed this week at the elementary and junior/senior high. Anyone in the community can make a drop-off during regular school hours.

To purchase the TerraCycle containers, the group has a third recycling program underway: collecting broken crayons. The broken ones will be turned into new ones and sold (to reimburse the costs of buying the TerryCycle containers).

Students in 4th through 6th grade can still sign up to join the Green Team. They just need to stop by the Elementary School office and pick up a permission slip.
