After eight years operating as a club sport, swimming is now a varsity sport at Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School.

The Board of Education added the sport by an unanimous vote Tuesday (Feb. 18), after an Athletic Office committee analyzed the sport’s growing appeal and potential costs. While the sport is being added for both boys and girls in grades 9-12 (giving each 10 varsity sports/see chart below), the athletes will compete on a co-ed team under one coach.

The district’s expense is expected to be about $6,000 annually, which covers the cost of a shared coach and pool access. Students and their families have paid participation fees and other associated costs to keep the club going.

Ottawa Hills’ club team this season had 12 swimmers (all girls) and shared a coach with Central Catholic High School; practices are at the pool inside St. Francis de Sales School. In general, club sports are funded by parents but receive Board of Education approval in order to have the students officially represent and compete on behalf of the school at meets, games, and matches. In the past, the board also has voted to allow an individual student to represent the school when there is no varsity or club team.

The Green Bears will compete in the smaller of the sport’s two divisions as determined by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).

The club team has grown without any subsidy from the district, and yet the swimmers have been representing and competing for Ottawa Hills High School since 2012. With only one other varsity sport (basketball) offered during the winter sports season, the team is expected to draw students interested in competing in another sport. (According to OHSAA, the swimming and diving season begins in late October and ends in late February.)
